What I love about intuitive eating.

Truly finding peace and joy with food. A few days ago I made cranberry orange muffins. I LOVE cranberry muffins. I don’t remember them having orange in them when I was a kid but, meh. Cranberry muffins are still delicious. I added 1 teaspoon of almond extract to kick the flavor up a notch. I ate 2 as soon as they cooled the recommended 5 minutes. Baked goods are always best fresh and hot out of the oven. Then I ate 2 more while I put them in containers. Over the past few days I grabbed 1 or 2 when ever I wanted. I enjoyed them whenever I wanted. I also forgot they were there sometimes.

That is the beauty of finding peace with food. It no longer controls your life. You eat what you want when you want. I learned how to make healthy choices but also be ok with survival choices too. A survival choice is when you need to eat but options may be limited for some reason. Some food is always better than no food. And life is unpredictable. We don’t need to be “perfect eaters”. We just need to take good care of ourselves and make the best choice possible. 

Food can have many contexts surrounding it. Joy at a celebration, like a birthday. Healing during a time of sadness, like a funeral. Closeness and sharing with family and friends just hanging out. Beauty related to presentation, like a wedding cake or gourmet meal. Comfort to your soul, like moms home cooking. Or yummy satisfying favorites, like cranberry muffins. Food should never be controlling or demanding of all your thoughts. Food doesn’t need to be an escape from emotions. Food is fuel for energy and soul.
